Look Lightbox: 10.25.11: Purple smokey eyes great for a night out

Since I don't believe in day/night specific I obviously wore this all day. This is probably a little MUCH for your average girl; not to mention if you have a corporate job this look will not fly! haha! Luckly I work in a creative environment that gets a kick out of all my product testing.

I've been testing some of the makeup I got in London and I was freaking out over the Barry M dazzle dusts, specificly Burgundy Noir. I planned a whole look around it. I created a super smokey eye and topped it with the shimmery dazzle dust. Instructions on eyes and full list of products used after the jump.

Last friday I had a couple of girls over for a mini crafting party that ended up turning into a mani-pedi party. I brought out all of my nail polishes and we went to town! Sonia (@alwaysinstyle) created an such amazing combo for her toes that I just HAD to steal it!

I used 2 coats of O.P.I. DS Coronation, a silvery holographic glitter and topped it with a coat of INGLOT #205 Flakies. I finished it off with 2 coats of Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat to smooth out the texture.

For the bonus glitter ombre

This Look Lightbox Face Of The Day is from last week. I took the basic smokey eye and added a pop of color to change it up a bit. I also went a little nuts on my hair and did a fun do inspired by Alice+Olivia Spring 2011 done by Ric Pipino. Check the look HERE.

A backstage photo I snapped last sept for the hair inspiration:

Products used:

Dr. Jart+ Beauty Balm
Kryolan Dermacolor Concealer
Laura Mercier Undercover Pot Secret Concealer #2
YSL Palette Y Blush
Make Up For Ever HD powder

Urban Decay Primer Potion
MAC Blanc Type, Patina (my new favorite eyeshadow!)
INGLOT AMC 58 (grass green with gold shimmer), AMC 64 (black with mulitcolor shimmer)
MAC Feline Eye Kohl (LE)
Bare Escentuals Volumizing Mascara
NYX Brow Cake, Blonde

I lost my list so I don't remember exactly what I am wearing on my lip. FAIL.

Happy Monday Kittens! Today's manicure was inspired by the awesome nail blog Chloe's Nails. She always does amazing things with her nails and one idea that I got from her was the concept of the matte flakies. Up until a few days ago I was struggling with my inferior matte top coats. One wasn't matte enough while the other cracked apart while drying. I finally caved and bought Essie Matte About You. I seriously am smacking myself for not buying it sooner. I saw it at Duane Reade for a few dollars cheaper than anywhere else, so that must have been a sign. I FREAKING LOVE IT! I don't know what about fall makes me want matte nails more, but I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot of matte mani mondays in the fall.

Now, don't get too put off by the amount of layers on this particular manicure. It evolved over a few day span.
1. I started off with GOSH, Fix Base Coat
2. Then applied two coats of Sally Hanson Hard As Nails Extreme Wear, Purple Pizzazz, a jelly finish purple with specks of golden pink micro flake.
3. Then topped it with a coat of Seche Vite, Fast Dry Top Coat
4. Followed by another coat of Sally Hanson Hard As Nails Extreme Wear, Purple Pizzazz.
5. One more coat of the Seche Vite, Fast Dry Top Coat
(Geez, that's a lot of coats, eh?) I wore that for a few days (no chips baby!) before I added...
6. INGLOT, 205 Flakies
7. One coat of Essie, Matte About You.

Flakies and I were taking a break after a whirl-win romance about a year ago. But when I saw their beautiful duochrome and fiery glow the spark in my glittery heart came rushing back. Oh flakies, how could I have ever let you go!?

Do you like matte nail polish?

St. Patrick's Day Mani 2011

Two manis in a week? YES! Here's my St. Patrick's Day manicure for you all! My background color is two coats of CND, Green Scene. I then then it topped with a coat of INGLOT, 203 which is a green-tone flakie in a clear base. Sally Girl, Chunky Gold Glitter finished off the look. I applied a coat of Seche Vite, Fast Dry Top Coat between the flakies and the gold glitter and two more on top. I included a close up picture to show the depth. Its a little on the blurry part, I should have lit it better and maybe used a tripod. oh well.

The inspiration was green for obvious reasons, the flakies add an essence of magic and the gold represents the pot of gold. Horray... now lets drink a green beer and call it a day. Cheers!

INGLOT Breaking News: Online Store and New PRO location

It seems as if INGLOT has finally launched their online store. I randomly went to their site this morning and the whole thing was completely redesigned. The opening page presents different search methods: face, nail, eyes, etc... The navigation on the left is pretty thorough with options of shopping by product or price. The navigation seems to be working well although I saw a broken image here or there. I'm sure they need time to work out the kinks.

An issue I am having with the site is that it doesn't give me any sort of idea about what this brand is about. There's no inspiration photography or background story. These are important things when running a brand. Why should I buy THIS makeup as opposed to any other brand. I think they were so worried about getting the store launched that they completely left out their identity.

Additionally, the pricing structure is pretty convoluted. (see screen shot below) You get a "discount" for buying as part of the freedom system. For example, a couple of weeks ago I made a rather large purchase from the Broadway store including a few freedom palettes. I didn't have them put together in the store since I knew I wanted to arrange them myself. As I put them together at home I realized that I already had one of the colors leaving me with an unfilled space in a 10-pan palette. I tried exchanging it yesterday and was told that I couldn't. It is unused and in it's original packaging but they said they could not do an exchange because I bought it as freedom system palette. This is not okay. Lesson learned, take a list with you so you know what you already have.

My second piece of news is the opening of a PRO store in NYC at the famous Chelsea Market. It's on the fifth floor and the hours are 10am-6pm, I am not sure of the weekend hours at this time. The Beauty Map has been updated!

In conclusion, I have been a big INGLOT supporter for a while, and will stick with them through their growing pains. I really do like their products. I hope that as they grow they don't lose sight of product quality and customer service. These things can make or break a brand.

Terrible drivers license pictures can haunt you for YEARS. Today I had to get one taken so I decided to stay on the neutral side of things. I did a warm neutral eye with some simple liner, a warm rosy-tan cheek and light coral gloss. Not over the top, but still ME.

Tips for ID picture makeup: try to avoid:

• crazy colors or rock n roll smoked out eye
• overly-contoured
• bright blush
• blood red lips or anything that may come off to harsh or overly trendy
• trend makeup, refering to anything that is too seasonal or avant gaurde.

Remember, you want to look like yourself in your picture because you will have it for YEARS. In my very first drivers license pictures I had pink hair. Kind of adorable, but also EVERYONE who looked at it pointed it out. "YOU DON'T HAVE PINK HAIR ANYMORE!"  Um, Thanks Captain obvious.

Additionally, I took these pictures about 10 hours AFTER I applied my makeup and it still looks good. Behold the power of primer!
