Inside the Industry: Behind The Photoshop Curtain

I work at an advertising/marketing agency that specializes in fashion retail, and I have a few thoughts on Photoshop and the industry that I'd like to share. I spend a lot of hours out of my day cleaning up photographs of super beautiful models both male and female. We enhance our images by booking photographers that specialize in fashion. We bring out certain features, mood, and emotions using makeup, lighting, composition and styling. Photoshop is just another one of those of tools used to make a photo more appealing to the eye. Photoshop is not the enemy folks, it's the abuse of photoshop that is.

Banning Photoshop in ads will NOT make much difference because the beauty world will still find a way around it. Whether it's lash extensions or just finding models who are naturally blessed with long, lush lashes they will book THOSE girls for mascara ads. I can't imagine what will be done for foundation ads.

We are used to looking at idealized representations of human form. Before the days of photoshop, images were literally airbrushed, recolored, cut apart and put back together to do some of the same things I do in photohop every day. It took a lot longer, but the results were still pretty good. In the world before photography, artists and illustrators often idealized human forms. If you were to open up an old Sears catalog you'd see a lot of long-legged women with tiny waists and perfect-looking hair and features. Human beings like to look at beautiful things. Our eyes/brains are naturally attracted to them.  Do you think Mona Lisa never had a zit on her face? I betcha she did but it certainly wasn't added into her famous portrait.

My point is that advertising is a fantasy. Its about making you feel that if you buy product X then you will look/feel/be like the people in the ads. I guess what's making people so upset is when product X doesn't live up to the expectations.

We start with a RAW image. On set a style is applied that enhances the photo right away. These can range from color correction, brightness, contrast, even pushing colors into blacks and whites. This stylizes the photo right away. Many photographers have certain "curves" that they apply that define their style. A few specific examples are photographers who have very specific styles include Guy Aroch and Mary Ellen Mathews. Then the images are marked up for retouching. The usual stuff includes cleaning up skin, delete dark circles, enhance clothes and makeup (on women) and even cleaning up hair. Further color shifts are made to enhance style and product.

For beauty retouching the general process goes a little something like this: general cleanup followed by more detail work like deleting wrinkles, enhancing color of skin and even tweaking facial features. As you can see in the above GIF I have arched the brows more, slimmed the nose and enhanced the chin by pushing it out slightly. The skin has been stripped of all freckles and pores/natural texture. Additional "light" has been added by darkening shadows and lightening high planes of the face where the light is naturally reflecting. If the model is wearing lipstick the lips are cleaned up and often reshaped. (Not the case in this photo) The backgrounds was finessed to POP the face. The hairline was filled and cleaned up. Oh, did I mention the eyelashes? You see the makeup was enhanced dramatically by cleaning up the edges and darkening the rims of the eyes. Also lightening of the eyes and reducing the redness of the inner tear duct pops the eyes.

This type of retouching happens to just about every ad you see. Sometimes less and sometimes WAY more.

PS. Just so you all know, I do not do this extent of retouching to my own photos for this site. I will clean a spot or two if necessary but NOTHING to the degree demonstrated in the above GIF.

4 Fashionable Movies that Entertain and Inspire

The end of summer is a fantastic time to get a bunch of friends together for an outdoor rooftop movie get-together. Just grab a roll of duct tape, a large sheet of foam core board a projector and voila! outdoor movie night! I have gathered up some of my favorite fashionable movies. Let me preface the list by saying, I've left out the overtly-fashiony ones like Zoolander, The September Issue and The Devil Wears Prada. I hope you're all not like, EARTH TO MEEKUS... why did you leave them out?! As I see it, you've all seen them a zillion times over so why list the obvious?

Valentino: The Last Emperor

Documentary, Available on Netflix Streaming/DVD
This documentary follows legendary fashion designer Valentino Garavani through the process of planning and showing his last show and 70th birthday. It delves into the personal relationship between him and long-time companion and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti. Plus, PUGGIES!!!

The Fifth Element

Drama, Available on Netflix Streaming/DVD
Another one of my all time favorites, this movie isn't about fashion, but there's plenty of it in there. This futuristic film features fashion heavy hitters Milla Jovovich as one of the main characters and costume design by Jean-Paul Gautier. This is one of those movies that I will always watch if its on TV.

Marie Antoinette

Available on Netflix DVD
Watch this movie on mute. It's seriously one of the worst movies I have ever seen plot-wise, however it is a feast for the eyes. It probably should have been a spread in a magazine not a film. It's beautiful and full of gorgeous (yet historically and hilariously inaccurate) clothes, shoes and food.

Prêt-à-Porter (Ready To Wear)

Drama/Comedy, Available on streaming/DVD
A drama/comedy set during Paris Fashion Week in the mid 90's has a few silly plot lines mixed with some fashion, bad acting and a whole lot of cameos from legendary figures in the fashion and acting world. Its not the BEST movie I have ever seen but it's light hearted and fun to watch.

Ombre nails were in full effect for Jen Kao Spring 2012. Wanda Ruiz for CND created the most AMAZING nails which she dubbed "Lethal Love" inspired by poisonous frogs. All four varieties were created using an airbrush machine. CND is encouraging everyone to try them at home using Midnight Sapphire, Anchor Blue, Rouge Red and Green Scene on the tips of a base coat of Inkwell, a deep blackened blue/green. Top with Air Dry Top Coat while wet for the ombre finish.

These booties are so GORGE but so out of my price rance. Since my lottery numbers have yet to hit, there will be no glitter botties for me. Four Ways To Rock Neon Before Summer Ends

It's officially late August but I am not ready to let summer go just yet. If you haven't jumped on the neon moment thats happening right now, what are you waiting for? Do it NOW! You don't have to look like a caution sign to do so.

If you're not quite sure if you can pull a neon off, try babysteps. Neon nails are amazing! If funky colors don't work for you (like yellow or green) try a neon pink or orange. Neon accent items really stand out and modernize an otherwise simple outfit. Pair a neutral shirtdress with a skinny neon belt. I bet you'll turn heads and get a few compliments. If you're feeling bolder, splurge on a great neon clutch bag. When paired with jeans and a simple top, the neon clutch amps up your style big time. If you have no fears of neon then by all means, go for the gold (or er, neon yellow) in a all neon dress. Trust me, they turn heads!

If you love the neon trend there is one thing to remember: one at a time. Pick one piece of neon per outfit. Layering neon is getting a little 80's.

Are you rocking neon yet?

Outfit Of The Day: Overdressed For a Wedding

"You can never be overdressed or overeducated." ~Oscar Wilde

I completely agree but I do know the feeling of sticking out when you look a little more fancy than the rest of the party. This was the case last weekend when I attended my cousin's wedding. My sister looked adorable in a orange one-shoulder cocktail dress and my mom looked effortlessly gorgeous in her tan and white sheath dress. I'm smacking myself for not getting any pictures of them! They looked good, but a bunch of other people looked like they hardly tried. I mean COME ON PEOPLE! This is someone's wedding. If you're going to wear a polo shirt, atleast throw on a nice-fitting blazer!

Anyway, I went hunting for a dress the previous week to find something to wear and I instantly fell in love when I tried this dress at Zara. I felt like a goddess! I couldn't believe a dress that lovely dress could have a price tag under $200. I then checked the tag to discover it is mostly polyester. However, I must note that polyester has come a long way since the days of the sweaty halter dresses of yesteryear. Don't get me wrong, I'm a total vintage enthusiast, but the newer stuff has a much better feel. My amazing dress has two sexy slits up the side which made me appear as though I was floating across the room. TO DIE FOR. DEAD.

Since I knew the dress was going to be on the fancy side, I didn't over do it on the accessories. I wore a simple gold cuff and a delicate gold chain with emerald and Ganesha charms. No earring, ovbi.

Breakdown:

Warby Parker Striped Olived Beckett glasses
Zara Women Dress (only available in store)
Satya Love Story Necklace
Satya Medium Gold Woven Cuff
Fioni Kutie faux-suede peep-toe pumps in Sand (yeah, I rocked a shoe from payless, WHAT?)
Makeup Forever Rouge Artist Intense, 37 lipstick

Yesterday and the day before it was over 90°F in NYC. YUCK! I am not ready for this type of heat quite yet. When you can't beat 'em, join 'em. I donned my summery garb to help myself not feel as bad about the sticky air.

The other day I got a chance to check out the amazing custom creations of Mallory Musante and chat with Celebrity Stylist Yannique Joseph. Mallory Musante uses special leather paint to create one of a kind shoes with hand painted designs. Her recently launched a bridal collection is beautiful, unique and perfect for any bride. Mallory says that she gets tons of requests for "something blue." Kind of genius, right? The designs all real leather and come in 2 styles: a 1-in platform with a 4-in heal and a pointed-toe kitten pump with a more modest heel height of 2 3/4-in.

I chatted a bit with celebrity stylist Yannique Joseph about her top pick. She loves the Evelyn in white. Side note: this was the overwhelming fav by just about eveyone in the room. (see second and third pictures in the gallery) This particular pair retails for $150, which is a steal for such a unique item.

Check out Mallory Musante Shoes online and browse the shop for more amaizng designs. Also note, she will embellish a client-provided shoe as long as it's real leather. (Her process only work on real leather.)
